You're Symbolism!

In late 1800's the world of art was filled with
art movements which all seemed to promote some
external cause. A group of poets, writers, and
artist got fed up with this exploitation of
art, and founded a new art movement, symbolism,
whose primary cause was to create art just for
the sake of creating art. In visual arts,
symbolists were quite flexible when it came to
the technique - their styles varied from
traditional to impressionist and expressionist
- but the contents of mystical their works of
art were always, needless to say, suymbolic.
What they painted didn't always directly
correspond to what they were actually
portraying; a young boy getting out of bed in
the morning may have portrayed coming in age, a
skeleton represented death, and an angel stood
for innosence, for instance. The right
interpretation was usually left to the viewer.
The atmosphere in symbolist works of art was
often spooky, mystical, dreamy, and sensual.

Famous symbolists: Gustave Moreau, Hugo Simberg

Looks like an amazing movie for myriad reasons. I applaud the writer and Ang Lee for making such a bold and beautiful film. I hope it does what I think it will: change some of America's outlooks on gay relationships.
Awesome! This shows how love has no boundaries.
I feel like writing a love story now.

Holy hell this is funny. Not the subject matter mind you, but the way this total jerk off Camenker is made to look like a complete idiot. Does gay marriage cause more pollution? Does it cause the crime rate to go up? What a total PRICK! The sad part is that he represents our ruling class. Because of people like Camenker people don't have the right to marry whomever they choose. Before they get into the interview check out O'Reiley and the Senator before that. Fucking ass holes! Who says love knows boundaries and who says it's wrong to marry the same "gender?" People need to wake up and start questioning this bullshit! There is no reason we need to lay down and accept this as fact. It is not inherently wrong to love the same sex. In fact Greeks promoted it many hundreds of years ago. WTF!!

Oct. 20th, 2005 02:27 pm Long time no...

I have a few minutes to update. The performance of "Annie Get Your Gun" went so well we had standing ovations all three nights. It was wonderful for my first experience in theater ever. With the extra time the end of the show lent, I became a member of Circle K. It's a nationally recognized University sponsored volunteer organization and my first project is to clean the land of our adopted highway and my next is to work with the SPCA. I have also found my Great Uncle, my deceased Grandmother's brother and established a relationship with him, strengthened my bond with my Grandfather and learned more about my Grandma before she passed, and am currently adapting the muscial "Funny Face" to stage for a benefit performance in honor of Breast Cancer survivors, and friends of. That is set to perform next October, the preliminary work now is to secure the backing of the ACS and donations from local companies for props, costumes, music, ect.
Still loving my theory class as it becomes more and more politically inclined. I have been informed that there are positions available through my school in Greenpeace. I am heavily considering the job. I plan on studying abroad for my summer semester and have narrowed it down to Japan, Italy, Spain, China, and France in that order. I say narrowed because Egypt, Morroco, London, Australia, and Ireland were in the running at some point. If anyone has any suggestions or has been to any of the countries of choice and recommends it or does not recommend it, please let me know.
Hope all is well with your world!

Here is a little something I am working on (okay so I just made it up these past two minutes, but it might go somewhere):

Sometimes we fall
and sometimes we crawl,
but everytime we burn
we yearn
for the answer,
a reason to explain
all,
to explain
why we fall.

Learning about how Derrida, Lacan, and Barthes have brought new meaning to language and Freud's research of the self. Learned about Pound, Eliot, and Williams innovations of poetry and how it came to be what it is today. My Teaching Assistance project is on slam poetry. This has been a very intriguing semester. Next semester will find even more adventure. I haven't been as creative as usual. Not working on any of the screenplay ideas I have, finished my third (it was a short) months ago and am inundated with so much theory that I am too grounded in acedemia to feel creative. I feared this, but I also realize that my writing, what little I do, is now an informed writing. A writing with more truth in it, not as sloppy or abstract, because as Pound says, "Go in fear of abstractions." I have a response paper due on how Derrida's theories tie into Freud and Barthes and Saussure's. I think I can handle it. On top of everything, the company has stepped up the rehearsals to every day of the week. Good thing we take Jewish Holidays at our University. I have time to catch up on my short story, my children's book, and my response paper on Lacan and his theory of feminist sexuality.
I love a good challenge and nothing is more challenging than the concept of love and desire.

Bill Maher on his Real Time show tonight. Awesome!!

He said in closing:

Herbert Hoover was a shitty president, but even he never conceded an entire metropolis to rising water and snakes.

On your watch, we've lost almost all of our allies, the surplus, four airliners, two Trade Centers, a piece of the Pentagon and the City of New Orleans…Maybe you're just not lucky!

I'm not saying you don't love this country. I'm just wondering how much worse it could be if you were on the other side. So, yes, God does speak to you, and what he's saying is, “Take a hint.”

I write, I attend classes, and I hand in assignments but the creativity is lost in a sea of theory and criticism. I am so inundated with facts and what ifs that I can't find my way to the real truth, at least not today. Exhaustion sweeps me under a rug of denial as I pretend everything is all right, at least for one more moment. Deadlines, phone calls, books to read, rehearsals, no time to ask my self what is it all for because if I did, if I stopped for a fraction of time I would have an answer...then what?

Sep. 15th, 2005 06:25 pm Lyrics to the song I am listening to right now...

The Ceiling Above You

The Sunday moon was last in sight
You fainted blue and no one here could know
He wiped his tears and followed up
On lectures that were given long ago
He had her near for long enough
Yet didn't say just where he wanted to be
And now we know just what we felt
And anyone could see the 12 & 3

And mandarins and oval seams and rotten plants
Just standing there and smile
And silhouettes of worse than blue
Just hanging off the ceiling above you
Above You

His soul was buried long ago
But deep down there kept something whole
And words could say what one don't care for anymore
It's just a game for
The faded blue just hanging loose from A to B
Philanthropy of space
And now we know just what we felt
And everyone could see the 12 & 3

And mandarins and oval seams and rotten plants
Just standing there and smile
And silhouettes of worse than blue
Just hanging off the ceiling above you
Above you

The day you left before you knew
That this was here long before you too

And mandarins and oval seams and rotten plants
Just standing there and smile
And silhouettes of worse than blue
Just hanging off the ceiling above you

-Theo Eastwind "The Ceiling Above You" from his album entitled One

I had an Awesome time at rehearsal last night and followed a wonderful night with a great day. No, I haven't gotten much work done in my classes; assignments are due tomorrow, but life is grand. I went on a canoe trip with my Bible study group and met some great people. If it wasn't for SUNY here, there would be nothing. Someone said something about the fact that it isn't where you are physically that makes you happy, it's where you are spiritually. I have finally gotten it and find that to be so true. Don't get me wrong, I miss Austin, but I can be happy anywhere and that is the greatest gift I have ever given my self. I am working on a children's book for my children's writing/lit class that I hope to publish in a few months. I am also hoping to find more productions with this community theater company to work on after "Annie Get Your Gun" at the end of this month. In the midst of classes, theater performances, and Bible group trips I am saving money for a Canon or Arri so that I can film those screenplays I have written. I am Not waiting around for someone else to tell me what he/she thinks of my script and then waiting some more after that to find out if it will ever be made into a movie. Especially since the movies that have been in the theater lately leave much to be desired to say the least. I am trying to be nice, I know that writers put some work into those films, albeit to meet a deadline and not out of simple creativity or at least it doesn't seem that way. That is my advice to those of you who dream of making movies. Do it. Be the next "Blair Witch", or "El Mariachi" filmmaker. Robert Rodriguez has many good ideas and tons of advice to offer about doing it cheaply. Any dream of yours is attainable just find a way to do it and do it, the only thing standing in your way is you. It does not matter if you do not have money right now, although I personally know that is the easiest complaint/excuse to trap one into not taking action. You will find the money or someone who has it and is willing to take a chance on you. There are even government grants and loans. I used to get pissed when I would hear someone tell me it is possible because I was so comfortable living in the impossibility of life that I didn't want to see the validity to just taking action to brining my dreams to fruition. I spent, no wasted too many years on feeling confined to what I have in front of me and not figuring ways around monetary restrictions or getting past my own insecurities. I hope the same doesn't hold true for you. I hope for all of you to make your dreams reality or at the very least enjoy the journey of trying to get there.

Sep. 5th, 2005 08:48 pm The movie of my life...

Ingmar Bergman
Your film will be 60% romantic, 35% comedy, 44% complex plot, and a $ 42 million budget.
Your life will be portrayed on film as an intense psychological drama, likely with some actresses screaming at the camera (Persona), or maybe a pleasant chess game between the Grim Reaper and a Crusader (The Seventh Seal). This Swedish director's films are intensely scrutinzed and studied in colleges all over the world to this day. This means that most Americans still don't understand his films! Still alive, he released in the U.S. in 2005 his first film in 23 years (Saraband), and he can still take on one more project to make your film biography. If curious, start with his films Wild Strawberries and Smiles of a Summer Night.

It's 1am and I'm working on my online poetry class. I realize I haven't written in this thing for over 5 months, but then, I really didn't think any one ever read it. If this touches one person then I haven't wasted my time (do not say what you are thinking-- "how cliche"-- I know already) ;o) Okay, what's new... I am back at school and my life has changed drastically. My daughter no longer lives at home because her father is married and I am not and in the state of VA being a single parent is looked on as a disgrace, especially if you live with someone else, anyone else. I am not the only person that this injustice has happened to; it is a phenomenon. Garland Waller from Boston has done a documentary on it and she is about to do another one which she has asked me to be a part of...but I no longer wish to discuss that topic. I've done very well keeping my self busy/distracted. I started out with 8 classes this semester and found my self in a new world overnight. Yes, I am in my first ever musical performance. Not a huge role and not in a professional acting/theater company, but it is something I've always wanted to do. When I say always, I don't mean this was a fleeting wish, or something along the lines of "gee I wish I could buy that new 2005 Cadillac STS", (although I do wish that), but, when I was 4 years old I had big dreams of being the next Julie Andrews. Needless to say I had to drop a class in order to fit in rehearsals and tutoring for the play since I need to brush up on my choreography and singing skills. Okay, where am I going with this? Have you ever had a dream, for say 20 some odd years, of doing something with your life and when you are presented with the possibility of achieving it, or at least getting close, and you finally have the confidence to go for it, you realize you have no talent or are not cut out to do what as a child you always thought you wanted to do? Uh, yeah...I can't dance even if someone attaches puppet strings to my body and pulls my arms and legs. Not that watching ten to twenty other community theater people helps me learn anything-at all. And if any of you know what community theater consists of you know what I mean. For those of you who don't, let's just say, it ain't whut yur thinkin'. I must be pretty bad if Grandma next to me (and I mean that she is literally someone's Grandma, probably even Great Grandma) could hit the high ones and the girls in front of me snickered whenever I opened my mouth. Okay, so it could have been my breath... The community theater people are great, they are like the film/acting community in Austin, a cult/clique of some really interesting and wonderful people. It's fun to make an ass of my self, don't get me wrong, and the beauty of community theater is that it isn't as serious and you can have more fun. But it really does something to you to watch your self look and sound as foolish as the old man who goes around grabbing people's asses while they are trying on costumes. As a child, I was told I could sing and dance and so I believed it, but that was almost 20 years ago, it's true when they say if you don't use it you lose it.

Mar. 21st, 2005 11:38 am Theo Eastwind

...is the best NYC independent performer I've ever seen, heard, or met. He has so much talent and will be featuring his next cd release on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. He's on MSNBC @ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5682773/
and has made a name for himself as an underground musician. I am taking this time to give him accolades because right now I need to take the focus off of myself and my life. Talking about me and the myriad of things that envelope my life, the crap that smothers any semblance of happiness and peace, gets me nowhere. Rather than dwell in the crap, I think about something and someone else, at least for right now, which is what life is all about; living moment to moment in the here and now.
So...here's to Theo, the amazing singer/songwriter who is the only one in this very moment that is able to keep me from feeling like complete shit. Ask me in a few minutes what's new...
